An International Scientific Collaboration



The Russian Character and Personality Survey (RCPS) is a research project initiated in the Department of Psychology, University of Tartu, in collaboration with a number of Russian colleagues. It's general purpose is mapping personality traits, national character and values in Russia, one of the largest countries in the world.

The data collection phase of the Russian Character and Personality Survey (RCPS) was successfully finished in the end of 2007. Overall, 40 Russian universities from 34 different administrative regions contributed with data. The regions represented in the RCPS dataset are shown in the Figure 1.

The total number of subjects participating in the RCPS was 10 862.

  • Observer-rating data using the Russian version of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory were obtained for 7 065 targets.

  • Typical Russian (Russian national character or autostereotype) was rated by 3 677 people

  • Socially desirable personality trait levels were rated by 3 610 students.

  • Self-ratings of personality traits were provided by 10 762 students.

  • Items in background questionnaire concerning respondents characteristics, values and beliefs were responded by ~ 10 500 to 10 800 persons.

As of September 2009, three articles based on the RCPS data have been published or accepted for publications.
